Y2 - 1 1911 'B' Type London Bus
ORIGINAL VEHICLE

ISSUED  1956

DESCRIPTION

Scale 1:100

Number 2 of the first 3 releases on show at Harrogate, the Y2 bus is a delightful replica of the 'Old Bill' type buses that were on the streets of London in the early century.

The first issue, on the side where the transfer sits are 2 small lugs to line the transfer up and very early versions (or maybe preproduction ) had these lugs missing  Thanks to Bob Tutt of the UK, I am able to show you one of these very rare versions, but this model also has casting changes to the rear passenger step as well, being thinner than the normal issue so a very early version indeed. It like the following, had what is called by collectors as '4 over 4' which relates to the side windows . This was changed to strengthen this area to '8 over 4' with the addition of a small brace in the upper window

The underside of the top deck can be either bare metal or tan the same as the top.

The drivers came in light blue (4), dark blue, black, grey and brown and there is really no significance to which is on each model  with the last 3 colours mainly appearing on the black wheel issue only. All wheels were 'grenodised' (bare metal) until the last run which had black finished wheels (5). Axles can also be the earlier crimped or later riveted.

An interesting point is that the D1 box on this model is one of the very hard to obtain and fetches a high premium when sold.

A beautiful model that has only recently been listed in the book despite being known before. Several have come to light without the small locating bars placed either side of the 'GENERAL' decal. It is presumed this was a very early modification to assist with decal location and thus avoiding rejects which were not located right

No prepro models are known to exist, however the model shown above has a totally different rear step, being thinner and cast different. I would without doubt, say that this is a very early model, almost prepro, which had this part strengthened due to breakages in the tumbling process (known as 'Fettling' in diecasting)
